On December 17, 2004 Pfizer announced that a government sponsored study on Celebrex's ability to lower cancer risks was stopped after researchers learned that Celebrex's risk of causing a major heart attack was two-and-a-half times greater than the risk for patients taking a placebo. The study indicates that Celebrex's risk of heart attack and stroke as great of not greater than that posed by Vioxx.
